WHEN SHOULD WE INTERVENE ON STIMMING BEHAVIOR?
Intervene if:
The stimming limits the person from doing everyday tasks (e.g., school, work).
The stimming causes harm, like hitting themselves.
Makes social interactions harder (e.g., bullying, or impacts social relationships, etc).
It prevents learning or focusing.
When intervening:
Understand why the person is stimming (e.g., stress, excitement).
Offer alternative sensory activities that meets the individual's needs.
Use positive reinforcement to encourage other behaviors.
Make sure the approach respects the person’s needs.
